The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel nationwide dropped for the sixth straight week, sinking 2.4 cents to $2.748 a gallon, according to US Department of Energy information.

The price decline was the biggest since a 2.7-cent decrease September 7, and it has fallen 6 cents in the past six weeks, after a 22.6-cent gain in the previous four weeks. Despite the drop, the price is 32.6 cents higher than the same week in 2008.

The cheapest diesel remains along the Gulf Coast at $2.699, while California is still the highest-priced area at $2.915.
