EPA awards idle reduction grants

Oct 17, 2005 2:30 PM

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a $5 million package in grants under the SmartWay Transport Partnership that is designed to reduce truck idle time.

The grants are being awarded to the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University; the Ohio Department of Development; Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority (Oregon); American Transportation Research Institute; and North Carolina State University.

SmartWay grants support a first-of-its kind initiative that deploys a wide variety of idle reduction technologies on trucks and at truck stops and ports across the nation.

In addition, the grants will spur development and commercialization of idle-reduction technologies that yield even greater benefits as their use becomes more widespread, according to the EPA information.
