SI Onboard 9150 digital CAN weighing system can provide tilt compensation

Vishay Precision Group Inc announced that SI Onboard, a  brand of the VPG On-Board Weighing product line, has introduced a digital  on-board weighing system in North America. A weighing system based on the CAN  standard and featuring tilt compensation, the SI Onboard 9150 system provides  high accuracy regardless of truck position; simple calibration through setup  wizards; detailed, real-time diagnostics; and a graphic color TFT display.

The 9150 is optimized for underbody on-board weighing in  a range of truck makes and models to optimize payload, prevent overloading fees  at truck scales, and reduce vehicle maintenance by preventing overloading.  Using digital communication instead of an analog signal in these applications,  the system provides a higher immunity to electromagnetic noise and better  performance under high temperatures and humidity conditions.

This system provides gross or net vehicle weight with  high accuracy, as well as axle group loading and overload alarms for trucks and  trailers. The 9150’s tilt compensation measures tilt angle of truck and trailer  in both pitch and roll axes. Measured angles are used to compensate readings  from load cells to ensure accuracy regardless of truck position.

The digital CAN system is composed of two components: the  9150 meter to provide the user interface and the 9150 JBOX/transmitter to  integrate the interface with the load cells, signal processing, diagnostics,  and local functionality needed for setup and calibration per trailer. The 9150  meter has a bright 4.3-inch graphic color TFT display with LED backlighting to  display weight, configuration, and diagnostic results. Offering a wide viewing  angle under all lighting conditions, the interface provides four arrow keys and  four soft keys for easy operation and navigation among the meter’s menus and  modes. The meter’s RS-232 interface allows for connection to a printer or  in-cab PC, while a USB interface enables backup and restore of setup parameters  and user data.

For intuitive setup using the 9150’s password-protected  wizards, the operator selects the relevant configuration from the drop-down  menu, and the system automatically configures the needed parameters. Up to  eight 9150 transmitters can be added to the system to support an additional  four to eight trailers. For connection of the trailers, including hot swaps,  all operational and setup parameters are stored in the 9150 transmitter. Once  the trailer is connected to the truck, the 9150 meter reads the required  parameters from the transmitter and updates the system accordingly.

The 9150 runs real-time diagnostics of load cells,  transmitters, and meters, and it can test the parameters of each load cell  individually. Faults and alarms are displayed on the screen—in addition to an  audible alarm—showing fault location and details. Operators can switch off  faulty load cells and continue operation without them.
