Oseco rupture disc improves safety of pressurized railcars

Jun 1, 2010 12:00 PM

Pressurized railcars are at constant risk of explosion due to improper or changing pressurization. Offering an improvement over traditional, failure-prone composite discs, Oseco has released the new SRC (scored railcar) rupture disc. The SRC meets AAR standards and protects against railcar explosions.

The SRC is a precision-scored disc, which fits standard threaded or bolted railcar safety vents. This disc will burst and safely equalize pressure if the car's internal pressure ever builds or drops to a dangerous level, eliminating the danger of explosion.

Composite discs traditionally used by pressurized tank car users and manufacturers utilize a PTFE Teflon sealing membrane, which is susceptible to damage and pinholes that can cause leaks. Available in Inconel or stainless steel for corrosive applications, the SRC disc features a solid metal design that completely eliminates the fragile PTFE seal and locks out damage-causing foreign materials, even when subjected to constant pressure for extended periods.
