Niswander: Raise rollover awareness

Apr 5, 2005 9:23 AM

Raising the tank truck industry awareness of vehicle rollovers is one effort underway by the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) and its members, said Steve Niswander of Groendyke Transport Inc.

Niswander encouraged members of the NTTC Safety Council meeting in Phoenix AZ March 30-31 to also adopt an outreach program to carriers that are not members of the association.

He urged increasing driver awareness of rollover dangers.

Dan Shelton of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said at the meeting that the Department of Transportation agency is working with tank trailer manufacturers to design trailers with lower centers of gravity in an effort to reduce rollovers.

He added that the agency is considering making rules that would require stricter driver training programs for rollover prevention.

Full coverage of the NTTC Safety Council meeting, as well as the Tank Cleaning Council meeting held March 28-29, will be available in the June issue of Bulk Transporter.
