New book commemorates August Fruehauf

March 11, 2015

Take a step into the past and re-live a moment in history when you read “Singing Wheels, August Fruehauf & The History of the Fruehauf Trailer Company.” Follow along the sweeping tale of a classic American enterprise and of the country it helped to grow, from the start of World War One to the end of the 20th century.

With the invention of the semi-trailer in 1914, and with many other innovations to come, August Fruehauf's story is an integral part of North American transportation history.

Key points to keep in mind:

-the national presence with 16 operating manufacturing plants around the country coupled with 78 parts and service dealerships made the name nationally known and recognizable. In 1997 when the US company went bankrupt, it was ranked the 75th largest company in the world.

-Fruehauf was a huge defense contractor and had at least 125 patents just for their military contributions and inventions alone.

To commemorate the centennial in 2014, The Fruehauf Trailer Historical Society presents a biographical essay on August Fruehauf and the history of the company he created.

With Ruth Fruehauf's insider knowledge, and 90 pages of rarely seen original photographs from the family archives, the book also offers a close look at the people behind the company, some of them a little larger than life. It includes presidents and Hollywood stars, and no small measure of intrigue.

“Singing Wheels, August Fruehauf and the History of the Fruehauf Trailer Company” is available directly from the Fruehauf Trailer Historical Society or through Amazon, priced at $29.95 (soft cover) and $39.95 (hard cover).
