Western Star announced that the Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 engine will be available for 4900 FA and 4900 SA truck models beginning in January 2003.

The 12.8-liter, in-line six-cylinder MBE4000 engine is ideal for Western Star vocational applications, according to John Merrifield, Western Star senior vice-president of sales and marketing. The MBE4000 engine is rated from 350 to 450 horsepower with peak torque of 1,550 lb/ft at 1,100 rpm. Incorporating advanced diesel technology, the MBE4000 is exempt from the October 2002 emissions standards and does not require any engine modifications or after treatment devices under current rules.

With advanced electronic controls, the MBE4000 can be customized for specific vocational needs. Equipped with a wastegated turbocharger, it offers optimum performance at any engine speed, which translates into greater productivity and driver satisfaction. Unit pump fuel injectors contribute to its excellent fuel economy and longer maintenance intervals.

The standard engine brake offers about 300 horsepower for braking for maximum safety and reduced maintenance costs. This superior engine braking is achieved without the exhaust noise that is prohibited in some communities. An optional turbo brake is available for up to 600 braking horsepower.
