Carriers would have to obtain a permit from the Washington DC Department of Transportation to transport hazmat products within two miles of the Washington capitol and federal buildings if a new city law goes into effect, according to news reports.
The governing body for DC, the Council of the District of Columbia, approved emergency legislation February 1 that would require the permit and the mayor has said he would sign it.
The council decision was made as part of an increased security effort for hazmat materials.
Products expected to fall under the permit include Class 1 explosives, Class 2 flammable gasses, Class 2 poisonous gasses, and Class 6 poisonous materials.
