The US Senate confirmed Linda J Fisher as deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency on May 24, 2001.

Fisher will be the top managerial and policy assistant to Whitman. She has been extensively involved in environmental issues throughout her career, including a decade of experience at EPA, from 1983 to 1993. She held a number of high-level positions, including chief of staff; assistant administrator for policy, planning and evaluation; and assistant administrator for prevention, pesticides and toxic substances.

From 1995 to 2000, Fisher was vice-president and corporate officer at the Monsanto Co, St Louis MO. She also practiced law with the Washington, DC law firm of Latham and Watkins.
