The Transportation Services Index (TSI) for freight rose 0.8 percent in December from the November level, following two monthly declines, according to information from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The December freight index of 108.4 was down 3.9 percent from its peak of 112.8 in January 2005. The December 2006 level of 108.4 was the lowest December level since 2003 and fell 2.3 percent from the December 2005 level, the largest decline since 2000 and the second largest decline in the last 10 years.
TSI is a single seasonally adjusted index of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline, and local transit.
