The number of fatalities from large truck crashes declined slightly in 2005 from 5,235 in 2004 to 5,212 in 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Compared to truck statistics, the total number of fatalities in all vehicles rose 1.4 percent from 42,836 in 2004 to 43,443 in 2005. The rate of fatalities was 1.47 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, up from 1.45 in 2004.

The data also confirmed that fatalities in large truck crashes decreased after increasing for two consecutive years.

However, the number of truck occupants killed in crashes increased 4.8 percent in 2005 from the year before: 803 in 2005 and 766 in 2004.
