A new technology could eliminate some of the most deadly forms of water pollution, say researchers at MYCELX Technologies Corp of Gainesville GA.

Tests and field trials show that the technology, patented under the MYCELX name, successfully removes hydrocarbons — including oil, gas, diesel fuel, PCBs, benzene, kerosene, and sheen — from water in a single pass. Sheen, (the rainbow coloration that forms on water contaminated with pollutants), one of the most difficult pollutants to remove with current remediation methods, can be removed 100% using this technology.

The firm owns five process and compound patents and has received two Chemical Abstract Services numbers, assigned to new molecules, for MYCELX: 173967-80-1 and 173967-81-2.

While the Environmental Protection Agency allowable limit for hydrocarbon pollution is 15 parts per million, researchers have proven that the tiniest drop of oily bilge-water can kill hundreds of thousands of lobster eggs. MYCELX technology reduces hydrocarbons in water to less than one part per billion, which is below detectable limits for testing results.

This technology can be infused into virtually any substrate — including bilge filters, oil spill booms and perlite — and MYCELX-infused products can be safely incinerated and used to generate energy due to their high Btu content.
