The chemical industry can't afford to let down on security efforts and should continue vigilant, speakers said at the Chemical Week Transportation and Distribution Conference January 13-14 in New Orleans LA.

Ronald Keegan of Engelhard Corp emphasized the importance for companies to be alert against terrorist threats, calling for improvements in personnel training and training manuals, facility security, policy and procedural documents, follow-up security audits, and employee background assessments.

Yone Dewberry of BDP International reminded company managers to review their entire supply chain, including companies it does business with, to examine potential risk.

Considerations also should include an evaluation of how long it would take to recover from a serious incident, how much revenue would be lost, and the time involved for suppliers to replace lost inventory.

The good news is that increased security programs also can benefit a company by improving overall employee safety and reducing product theft and tampering, Keegan said.

In-depth coverage of the conference will be included in the March edition of Modern Bulk Transporter.
