SECURITY, new ideas, trends, and technology developments will be the theme for the Independent Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) International Operating Conference and Trade Show June 10-13 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Houston, Texas.
Security is a timely topic and will be covered in sessions June 10 and June 11. Security at California's marine oil terminals and a maritime homeland security update will be followed by sessions on chemical industry security initiatives and terminal risk profiles after September 11.
Additional highlights of the meeting are tours of Houston facilities: Houston Fuel Oil Terminal Co, Stolthaven Houston Inc, and Oiltanking Houston Inc.
The goal for the conference is to provide terminal operators, environmental professionals, and senior managers with new informational tools that can be used in the workplace to make improvements, save money, or add value in other ways, according to conference information. Another value of the conference is the opportunity to exchange information with industry colleagues.
Conference participants and speakers will be from ILTA terminal and supplier members, major oil and chemical companies, utilities, pipeline companies, government, and other industry professionals.
Keynote speaker for the event is Jim Nokes, executive vice-president, worldwide refining, marketing, supply, and transportation for Conoco Inc. He will discuss the challenge of meeting America's energy needs.
Nokes will become executive vice-president, refining, marketing, supply, and transportation for ConocoPhillips upon completion of the proposed merger between Conoco and Phillips, which is expected in the second half of 2002.
With Conoco since 1970, he has held various administrative, planning and operating management positions with the Conoco Pipe Line subsidiary. In 1981, Nokes became manager of Conoco's natural gas and gas processing department with responsibility for commercial operations. He returned to Conoco's transportation business in 1987 as general manager of transportation and president of Conoco Pipe Line Company.
Transferred to London in 1989, he served as director and general manager of business development for Conoco's exploration and production affiliate. In 1991, he returned to the United States as vice-president and general manager of the company's North American marketing business. In 1993, he became vice-president and general manager of product marketing, supply and transportation. In 1994, Nokes became vice-president of Conoco's North American refining and marketing operations, and in 1998 he was named president of North American refining and marketing. Nokes took on his current position heading up Conoco's global downstream operations in 1999.
He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and a master's of business administration from the University of Arkansas. A member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Nokes also sits on the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Institute (API), and has served on the Transportation, Marketing, and Downstream committees for API.
Other speakers at the meeting will touch on a variety of subjects. In addition to the traditional presentations on terminal operations, the conference features discussions on changes in property-casualty insurance coverage for terminals, with advice on how to deal with insurers in the new hard market. Topics also include wastewater treatment, thermal desorption, environmental compliance, and tank floor inspection.
Breakout sessions have been organized into subject tracks, so that sessions in the same subject area are not scheduled at the same time. With the new track system, attendees can attend all of the sessions in one of the tracks, or focus on the sessions of greatest interest in each track. The subject tracks are Environmental Compliance, Regulatory Issues, Terminal Operations, and Tank Management.
The trade show features products and services important to the success and efficient operation of bulk liquid terminals. This year it will feature 188 exhibitors from all sectors of the supplier industry.
