SAN FRANSCISCO'S rapidly changing weather provided a fitting backdrop for the 54th annual National Tank Truck Carriers conference and tank truck equipment show. The meeting was held at the historic Westin St Francis Hotel.

Outside, the weather varied from sunny and warm to rainy and chilly. Inside the NTTC meeting, discussions ranged from the economic problems facing the tank truck industry and the need for aggressive, flexible management to security concerns growing out of last fall's terrorist attacks in the United States.

Joseph Clapp, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and former trucking company executive, provided a review of security-related changes in commercial driver licenses and continued efforts within the Department of Transportation to revise driver hours of service.

Among those attending the conference and trade show were carrier executives, supplier representatives, spouses, and government officials. More than 40 exhibitors participated in the event.

Harold A Sumerford Sr, chairman of J&M Tank Lines Inc, was elected the 2002-2003 chairman. Sumerford previously was southern region vice-chairman.

NTTC's 55th annual conference and tank truck equipment show is scheduled for May 18-19, 2003, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
