William A Quade of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been presented the 2006 Industry Safety Achievement Award sponsored by 13 industry associations.
The sponsors of the award include the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC), American Chemistry Council, American Petroleum Institute, Chlorine Institute, Compressed Gas Association, Consumer Specialty Products Association, CropLife America, Dangerous Goods Advisory Council, Gases and Welding Distributors Association, Institute of Makers of Explosives, International Oxygen Manufacturers Association, National Association of Chemical Distributors, and National Propane Gas Association.
Quade, director of FMCSA's enforcement and compliance office, received the award for recognized leadership and cooperation with industry in developing, promoting, and enhancing safety in the public interest.
Criteria for the award includes a record of safety achievement, service to the purpose of safety, involvement and cooperation with the affected industry and the public in developing and promoting innovative safety programs and standards, and professional safety recognition.
John Conley, National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) president, nominated Quade because of the his work on the development of the NTTC’s cargo tank test and inspection workshop program.
“There is no doubt that cargo tank safety has been improved through these workshops," Conley said. "I believe that the quality of regulations also has improved as the two-way communications environment of the workshops has helped FMCSA regulators better understand how the industry works.
"Perhaps as important, industry personnel from carriers and repair shops are much more comfortable in calling FMCSA inspectors for guidance because they have met them at the workshops.”
