Approved in September 2002 by the United Nations, the new Globally Harmonized System (GHS) protects people from the mismanagement of chemicals, classifies chemicals according to their hazard, and creates a labeling system based on universally understandable pictograms. The GHS will be fully operational by 2008 and will be updated regularly.
