The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) will continue with its on-site sensitivity security visits to ensure the security of transportation of hazardous materials on Ohio roadways. The purpose of the visits is to ensure that motor carriers throughout the state have a security plan in place and that employees know how and where to contact appropriate officials for suspicious activities.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiated the sensitivity security visits Sept 26, 2001, to protect the nation's transportation by commercial motor vehicles. PUCO hazmat and safety specialists and FMCSA conducted 906 on-site security visits of hazmat carriers in Ohio from Sept 26 to Dec 31, 2001.

PUCO specialists will continue to review security talking points with motor carrier representatives during every compliance review involving a hazmat carrier or shipper. Specialists also will provide security recommendations and will record any suspicious activities discovered.

Approximately 5,000 motor carriers are authorized to transport hazardous materials from, to, through, and within Ohio.
