In September 2000, Eldon MO-based Opies Transport Inc and its employees put forth team effort in financing and supporting fund-raising events for worthy causes.
Opies participated in the Jerry Lewis Telethon during the Labor Day weekend, which it has done since 1990. James Henley, vice-president of safety, presented a $1,300 check on behalf of Opies' employees to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This group is striving to find treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases while working to improve the quality of life for people with muscular dystrophy.
During the MS 150 Bike Tour, held September 9-10, Opies transported drinking water to about 1,400 cyclists for the annual fund-raising tour to fight multiple sclerosis (MS). Opies has been a corporate sponsor of the tour for the past 13 years. Two tractor-trailer units were fitted with drinking fountains, cleaned and sanitized, and filled with quality drinking water for delivery to various stops on the tour. Water deliveries were made by Opies employees. James Henley has donated time the past 12 years. Jon and Susan Freeman and their son, Cole, volunteered for the second year, with Mark Woodward and Curt Kratzer and his wife, Beverly, participating for the first time this year.
