Of the total operable refineries, 142 refineries were operating on January 1, 2006, with operating capacity listed at 16.4 million barrels per calendar day. Additionally, idled refining capacity was 800,000 barrels per calendar day higher than on January 1, 2005, primarily due to the lingering impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
