The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is proposing a new registration procedure for United States motor carriers, according to information published in the Federal Register May 18.
The proposal would apply to every US motor carrier, freight forwarder, and broker required to register with DOT under 49 CFR 390.19 or 49 USC 13901.
The proposed regulation would replace four current identification and registration systems with a single, online, federal system.
FMCSA also proposes to charge a $200 registration fee, plus certain fees for administrative filings costs.
The proposal does not provide for the hazardous materials safety permitting process or the hazmat cargo tank registration to be incorporated within the system, but the agency wants comments on whether it should incorporate the two.
Comment deadline is August 17, 2005.
Other parts of the proposal include a move to discontinue issuance of MC (Motor Carrier) numbers and phase out the use of current MC numbers within two years of the effective date of a final rule.
The DOT (Department of Transportation) number would become the sole identification number for all entities registered by DOT.
