Secretary of Transportation Norman Y Mineta is applauding the appointment John Magaw, former Secret Service chief, as Under Secretary for Transportation Security.

"John Magaw is a superb appointment," Mineta said. "He brings decades of wisdom, experience and leadership to our new Transportation Security Administration."

President Bush appointed Magaw to the post, from which Magaw will serve as the head of the newly authorized Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA, chartered by Congress last year, will take over transportation security nationwide, beginning with aviation security.

Magaw is an Ohio native whose federal career also includes leadership of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and most recently a senior position at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
