FOUR MEN urged members of the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) Safety Council to take courses provided by the North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI) to obtain transportation industry professional certification.

Jeff Arnold, Bob Bonich, Doug Lax, and Fred Sajewski joined in the discussion of the advantages of certification at the NTTC Council meeting conducted in St Petersburg, Florida, April 13-15.

Arnold is American Trucking Associations (ATA) director of NATMI. The institute is sponsored by ATA. Bonich is vice-president of human resources for Suttles Truck Leasing Inc. Lax serves as vice-president of safety and personnel for Infinger Transportation Company Inc. Sajewski is director of safety, compliance, and insurance for Manfredi Motor Transit Company. All have been involved in the educational program.

The certification is a formal means of establishing a professional reputation and measures education, experience, and expertise against objective standards respected throughout the industry, Arnold said.

The program is aimed at the transportation executive with the goal of promoting safety within the industry and recognition for the individual who has achieved personal growth and career development.

The men pointed out that NATMI certification is recognized by judges and attorneys in matters of testimony about motor fleet accidents. In today's complicated business environment, professional development is especially essential, said Sajewski.

Managers participating in the program have the advantage of working with a mentor who has completed the program. They can be certified as safety or maintenance/equipment directors, safety or maintenance/equipment supervisors, and commercial driver trainers.

The steps that lead to certification include completion of the required seminars, submission of a formal application and exhibit package with three letters of recommendation, and a successful score on an examination.

In order to remain current, an individual must be recertified every three years from the anniversary date of the initial certification. Recertification is based on a point system. Thirty points must be accrued within a three-year cycle and earned through industry involvement and professional development. Industry involvement includes participation in trade and professional associations, training meetings, and volunteer activities.
