Following reports of equipment and services vendors using very aggressive—in some cases misleading—advertising that implies they are endorsed by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) or that their services are required for compliance, DOT officials released the following notice:

“Please be aware that in registering for a DOT number, some of your company’s information is made available on our (DOT’s) public website. Therefore you may be the target for independent companies aggressively marketing products and services to employers using this public information. It is an employer’s choice to select which training and/or products it might need given the aforementioned guidelines.

“FMCSA neither approves nor endorses outside vendors of products, such as logbooks to satisfy the hours of service requirements in 385.8(a), or motor carrier training to satisfy regulatory requirements such as training for supervisors on drug and alcohol awareness required by 49 CFR 382.603.

“If a carrier receives an advertisement that improperly asserts an association with the Department of Transportation or the FMCSA, or attempts to obtain personal banking or credit card information not related to a purchase, please contact Tom Frazier, Investigator for the FMCSA at (540) 504-6436.”
