The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has formed a new Security Council with officers that include William F Downey, Kenan Advantage Group vice-president, who will serve as the council's second vice-chairman, according to ATA information.

ATA's security focus had previously been housed within its Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council, but given the growing and intense focus on security, the association determined it was appropriate to establish a separate entity dedicated solely to trucking security issues and operations.

The Security Council mission is to serve trucking industry security through education and training, the exchange of information, interaction between peers, and evaluation and exposure to new technologies.

The council's other officers include Brian Shutt, manager of security for ABF Freight System Inc, chairman, and Curtis J Shewchuk, corporate protective services director, Con-Way Transportation Services.
