DOT commission schedules hearings on fuel tax

Nationwide hearings are scheduled November 15, 2006, through April 19, 2007, to explore short and long-term alternatives to replace or supplement the fuel tax as the Highway Trust Fund's principal revenue source over the next 30 years, according to information from the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission will conduct the meetings and also will discuss the condition and future needs of the nation's surface transportation system.

The hearings will allow input from federal, state and local transportation officials and experts, as well as the general public, regarding transportation needs and solutions in their regions.

Dates, locations, and co-hosts include:

•November 15-16, New York NY, US Chamber of Commerce, American Road and Transportation Builders Association, Associated General Contractors of America, Coalition of Northeastern Governors, Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials, Council of State Governments’ Eastern Regional Conference, the I-95 Corridor Coalition and the New York Roadway Improvement Coalition.

•November 15-16, Memphis TN, Memphis Regional Logistics Council and the Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce.

•February 21-22, Los Angeles CA, California Marine and Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council, American Traffic Safety Services Association, Associated General Contractors of America and Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

•February 21-22, Atlanta GA, Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, State Road and Tollway Authority and Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

•April 18-19, Minneapolis-St Paul MN, National Governors Association, National League of Cities, National Association of Counties, US Conference of Mayors, National Conference of State Legislatures, International City/County Management Association, Council of State Governments, the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Department of Transportation.

•April 18-19, Chicago IL, Surface Transportation Policy Partnership, Illinois Department of Transportation and American Association of State Highway and Transportation.
