After the national threat alert was raised to High (Condition Orange) December 20, carriers are advised to be cautious. The alert level was raised by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) due to a high level of suspected terrorist chatter over recent days, as well as other information gathered by intelligence agencies, according to the Trucking Information Sharing and Analysis Center operated by the American Trucking Associations.
Carriers are advised to:
•Closely monitor news and information sources, especially the Truck ISAC website for alert information specific to the trucking industry.
•Assure that their security plans are fully operational.
•Review emergency procedures for the relevance of current threat information.
•Assure that the company’s emergency team can be located and activated in the case of an actual emergency.
•Tolerance for missing and overdue vehicles should be reduced to a minimum.
•Any suspicion of unusual activity or observations should be immediately reported to law enforcement and/or terrorism watch centers.
•Drivers should have two forms of government issued identification with them at all times, as well as any company ID.
•Drivers operating around airports, public transit operations, and maritime facilities should be advised to maintain an especially sharp watch for suspicious activities.
