THE COMFORTGUARD auxiliary power unit (APU) system from Cummins was presented at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

Cummins showed off its free interactive payback calculator for computing APU cost savings and its eight-page guide, Idle Talk: How the New Regulations Affect You.

The ComfortGuard cab air HVAC components for high-performance heating and cooling include an in-cab thermostat that can be controlled manually or programmed to start automatically based on thermostat settings or time of day. The system offers an effective solution for heating and cooling the cab with the main engine off.

For cooling, the ComfortGuard air system's 12,000-Btu capacity space-saving evaporator section mounts under the bunk and delivers up to 350 cubic feet per minute of cool air.

When the 4,000/8,000-Btu two-stage electric heat function is selected on the wall thermostat, it quickly warms the cab in subzero temperatures. The 120-volt power remains available from the APU receptacles for powering other loads while the heating and cooling system runs at full capacity.

The ComfortGuard installation kit includes quick-connect pre-charged line sets so the system installer doesn't have to evacuate or charge the system. All the electrical connections are design-mated to the ComfortGuard auxiliary power unit (APU) for a plug-and-play installation. The installation kit also includes registers, ductwork, and mounting templates — everything necessary to install the unit. The ComfortGuard system's plug-and-play design reduces the cost of installation by up to one-half, Cummins said.

Quick disconnects, pre-charged A/C lines, and compact dimensions allow system installation on most trucks in about a day. Unlike other units that have to be mounted vertically, limiting installation options, the ComfortGuard condenser can be mounted in any orientation. Upside down, right side up, or lying on its back. The system can be installed and serviced throughout the United States and Canada by the extensive network of Cummins distributors and authorized dealer service locations.
