CSX TransFlo has opened a new transloading terminal with the potential of handling up to 10,000 truckloads of product annually. The Elizabeth, New Jersey, facility began operations by transloading soda ash. The terminal is designed for foodgrade, agricultural, and mineral products. In addition, recently-approved permits have authorized it to begin handling hazardous materials, says John Xenakis, terminal manager for Savage Industries Inc, which operates the facility.
The new terminal is one of the company's largest and a key addition to its terminal network. It is located close to major New Jersey highways and adjacent to Interstate 95. An added value is its proximity to the New Jersey chemical coast, New York area port facilities, and customers throughout the New York metropolitan area.
With 187 railcar spots, the terminal has state-of-the-art transfer equipment and provides a truck scale, lighting, security fencing, office, a full-time manager, and truck parking.
A CSX TransFlo company-wide computer system and software are used in weighing and measurements, as well as billing and other administrative functions.
On site are portable belt conveyors, a MasterVac, pumps, and compressors, all provided by RBT Services Inc. The MasterVac conveys products under a vacuum. RBT Services also supplies drip pans and pads used in spill prevention, says Xenakis.
The belt conveyer can be used for a variety of products. The one in service today is customer-dedicated for soda ash. Customer-specified equipment will be added as requested.
Rail service is located in the Oak Island Conrail-shared asset operations area, and railcars are placed in Elizabeth to be switched into the terminal by CSX.
In addition to bulk transfer services, the terminal provides packaging, warehouse space, and rail storage in an adjacent area.
The terminal is a part of CSX TransFlo's North American network of full-service bulk product transfer facilities with more than 160 locations in 21 eastern states and one in Canada.
