AS IN International relations, when two groups speak different languages, a translator makes it possible for communication to occur.

A similar Web-based electronic terminal communication process is provided with a solution from Elemica that allows storage and terminaling facilities to communicate with customers and others in the supply chain no matter what system each company uses, said Bill Harvey of Elemica.

He made the comments at the Independent Liquid Terminals Association International Conference and Trade Show June 6-8 in Houston, Texas.

Elemica was founded in May 2000 as the brainchild of several major chemical companies to minimize the global chemical industry's supply chain inefficiencies. The new solution connects terminals, suppliers, and customers around the world with a click of the mouse.

A new Elemica electronic carrier booking service improves the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of communications with road transport and logistical service providers. Accurate, timely transmission of transport information is key to delivering high levels of service to customers, and crucial for the safety, reliability, and cost effectiveness of the supply chain operation, he said.

The program reduces the number of computer terminals required to handle several programs and offers a single connection through a hub. One standard is used for all communications to shippers, terminals, and others within the system.

An advantage of the program is that it allows those who have access to it to operate within their current computer programs, thereby eliminating additional training.

It also means reduced costs from having to purchase additional hardware in order to communicate with another program. The system eliminates shipper security risk associated with some remote access programs, Harvey said.

By eliminating various programs used by various companies, fewer errors are encountered. That means companies have fewer shipment problems and claims.
