Clapp, Janke to address NPTC conference
The National Private Truck Council (NPTC) has announced two keynote speakers for its 13th annual Education/Management Conference and Exhibition scheduled for April 28-30, 2002, at the Austin Convention Center in Austin TX.
Joseph M Clapp, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; and Michael Janke, veteran Navy SEAL and CIA operative, will be featured at the event.

Expo, seminar to reflect new face of logistics

North American Truck Show turning 30
The North American Truck Show (NATS) will hold its 30th-anniversary show May 2-4, 2002, at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston MA. This event will feature the Stars & Stripes truck show, an exhibition of 30 of the best show trucks from around the United States. With 15 tractor/trailer combos and 15 bobtails on display, the exhibition will include cash awards for Best-of-Show and People's Choice.
The Massachusetts State Police Road Team will conduct question-and-answer sessions on roadside inspections, and will hold a panel presentation on diesel emissions testing standards.
Seminars and technical sessions will be hosted by the Massachusetts Motor Transportation Association (MMTA). Topics will include hazardous materials training, preparing for a successful DOT compliance audit, tax elimination strategies, and fleet insurance savings strategies.

ECTA will explore personnel shortage issue
The European Chemical Transport Association (ECTA) will conduct a mini-conference and annual meeting April 25-26, 2002, in Antwerp, Belgium. The mini-conference will analyze root causes of the shortage of skilled personnel and propose solutions. This issue will be debated further by representatives of transport companies and major shippers.
Keynote speaker is Lawrence Watson, an expert in human resources, former partner of the Hay Group, and presently involved in the organization and management of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Alberta firm chosen Kenworth dealer of year
Edmonton Kenworth in Edmonton, Alberta, was named Kenworth Dealer of the Year for the United States and Canada during the annual Kenworth dealer meeting in Seattle/Tacoma WA. The Alberta dealership was chosen for the honor from among Kenworth's five Gold Award winners for 2001. Other Gold Award winners were Bay Area Kenworth, Oakland CA; MHC Kenworth, Oklahoma City OK; Sahling Kenworth, Kearney NE; and Truck Enterprises, Roanoke VA.
In 2001, a 48,000-square-foot flagship facility was opened in Edmonton by Edmonton Kenworth. The facility has 24 service bays, including two drive-through service bays for PremierCare ExpressLube service. The dealership now has three locations — two in Edmonton and one in Lloydminster, Alberta.

Tiona tips its hat to drivers for safety records
Tiona Truck Line held its annual Safety/Length of Service banquet at corporate headquarters in Butler MO recently. Ten awards were given to drivers who have been accident-free for more than five years. Two drivers were honored for driving more than 20 years without an accident.
Recipients of length-of-service awards were Ronnie Van Sandt, chief financial officer — UP, and Junior Hood, driver, 20 years; Donna DeLozier, safety director, 15 years; and Gary Hubbard, permits-accounts payable, 10 years.
Wayne McCoy of Butler was voted by co-workers as Driver of the Year. He will receive a weekend at the Chateau in Branson MO. During his tenure at Tiona, he has served as terminal manager, dispatcher, and driver/driver-trainer. Three drivers tied for runner-up: Rodney Evans, Houston TX; Jimmy Poole, Newton GA; and Kenny Robbins, La Cygne KS.
Scania, Hino enter cooperation agreement
Scania and Hino have entered a strategic cooperation agreement aiming at a long-term business alliance.
Hino focuses on medium-duty trucks from 6 to 16 tonnes gross weight, with extensions into light trucks below 6 tonnes and heavy trucks mainly optimized for weights up to around 30 tonnes, since gross weights in Japan rarely exceed 28 tonnes. These market segments are covered with the three Dutro, Ranger, and Profia truck ranges. Hino's market share in the medium/heavy truck segment in Japan is 30%.
Scania exclusively manufactures heavy trucks with gross weights above 16 tonnes. Gross weights of 40 tonnes are common in Europe. Train weights of 55-60 tonnes or more are frequently used in other markets, in particular Scandinavia and southern Africa. Scania's market presence is strong in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Scania is also one of the strongest European heavy truck makes in Southeast Asia (except Japan) and the market leader in the heavy-construction segment of South Korea.
Both Hino and Scania produce several types of bus chassis for coach, intercity, and city applications. In both cases, due to the comparatively small volumes on the bus market, truck components must be used to achieve economy of scale.
The first step in the cooperation involves Scania tractor units, which will be marketed by Hino in Japan. Tractor units account for around 5,000 of the 45,000 heavy trucks that will be sold in Japan in 2002. Sales are still dominated by rigids (40,000), but the tractor market is gaining ground, especially at the heavy end. Under evaluation is the potential use of the Hino 7-liter engine in Scania trucks up to around 20 tonnes. This would enable higher productivity for some weight-sensitive applications, such as distribution and container haulage. An engine of this size would also be suitable for certain bus applications.
