International Intermodal Expo, TransComp will co-locate
An agreement has been reached between the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) and the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) to co-locate two of the transportation industry's largest and most successful trade shows, the International Intermodal Expo and TransComp. This decision was reached by the two organizations based on positive results from holding their respective annual membership meetings together the past two years.
Exhibitions and educational programs will be held concurrently Nov 16-19, 2002, in Anaheim CA. In addition, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) will conduct its fall meeting, and NITL and IANA will hold their annual membership meetings at the same time. Registrants will have access to all the functions and activities (except for member-only meetings of the organizations) taking place during the shows. Co-location of the two trade shows and three membership meetings is expected to draw more than 4,000 attendees and feature transportation products and services from 425-plus carriers and vendors.

Conference to examine management of fatigue
Northwestern University researchers and a group of scientists, government, military, and transportation industry leaders will present a two-day conference on “Managing Fatigue in Transportation,” set for June 25-26, 2002, at the university's Evanston IL campus.
The interdisciplinary conference will present findings from the latest research on the biology of fatigue and sleep. Sponsored by Northwestern's Transportation Center, its Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology, and its Center for Public Safety, the conference will explore:

Techniques for detecting dangerous levels of fatigue before safety is jeopardized.

Developments in applying risk-management tools designed to maximize safety performance with limited resources.

Ways in which military and police organizations address fatigue issues.

Economic costs and benefits that fatigue management strategies offer.

IANA seminar will seek efficiency solutions
The Intermodal Association of North America (LANA) will hold its Intermodal Operations & Maintenance Seminar at the Oak Brook Hills Hotel in Oak Brook IL. Set for June 18, 2002, the annual seminar provides a platform for discussing operating and maintenance challenges, as well as exploring ways for improving intermodal freight efficiency.
Seminar topics include “Meeting the Chicagoland Terminal Capacity Challenge,” “Grounded Operations,” “Transaction Visibility,” “Chassis Solutions,” “Lift Technology,” “Maintenance Accounting,” and “Terminal Security.”
Until May 24, the registration fee is $259 for IANA members and the Intermodal Association of Chicago, and $325 for non-members. After that date, the fees become $309 for members and $375 for non-members. Discounts are available to IANA at-large members: $209 for early registrants, $259 after May 24.

NAFC sessions will be part of conference
The National Accounting and Finance Council (NAFC) of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) will hold four educational sessions during this year's ATA Management Conference and Exhibition.
The NAFC Annual Conference and Exhibit Forum, which has co-located to join ATA for its Oct 27-30 meeting in Orlando FL, will conduct four of 15 educational sessions being held by ATA policy departments, conferences, and councils. Sessions will deal with the insurance market, company capital financing, and load analysis and costing.
Two related sessions look at doing business in today's insurance market. NAFC's Risk Management Committee, with the ATA Insurance Task Force, is sponsoring these sessions, designed to give practical advice to trucking company executives.
The first insurance session will address hard market issues and how to satisfy underwriting requirements. The second session will analyze insurance program alternatives, what steps to take when the time comes for renewal, and ways to get the most affordable coverage for your company.
One financial session will examine the challenge of obtaining capital financing in a difficult and rapidly changing economic environment. The other will discuss how to optimize loads and activity-based costing.

Hazardous waste management seminars
Complying with hazardous waste management regulations has become easier, thanks to Ashland Environmental Services. Understanding requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is one of the regulatory areas outlined and explained in a series of regional seminars coming to 15 cities across the United States during the next several months, courtesy of Ashland.
Ashland's seminar may enable participants to meet their annual requirement for RCRA refresher training, as well as triennial requirements under Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Presentations by Ashland's environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) and law departments provide a macropicture of environmental regulations relating to hazardous waste management, including Superfund (CERCLA) regulations, record-keeping and reporting requirements, state regulations, industry and regulatory updates, and training requirements.

Truck World is launching pad for conference
Truck World 2002 will host the launch of a maintenance and technology conference that will provide fleet maintenance managers, technicians, and mechanics with information sessions and in-depth skills demonstrations. The first National Truck Maintenance and Technology Conference will take place Sept 26-27, 2002, at the National Trade Centre (CNE Grounds) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
This conference is planned as an annual event to be produced in Toronto under the auspices of the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA). The biennial Truck World will host the conference every second year.

School trains participants in use of LNG
NexGen Fueling, a division of Chart Industries, will offer a two-day LNG (liquefied natural gas) training school June 18-19, 2002. Training will be offered at Chart's Applied Technology location in Burnsville MN. This school is designed to provide basic understanding of the use of LNG in trucks, buses, and other vehicles. Participants will learn how an LNG/LCNG (liquefied compressed natural gas) fueling station works and how to maintain and operate an LNG project.
Training will cover the theory of cryogenics, LNG safety and applications; storage tank, vehicle, and station design; vacuum insulation technology; plumbing systems; and system installation, maintenance, and repair. A plant tour will be conducted.
