Goodyear named EPA elite performer

Mar 9, 2007 9:33 AM

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co facility in Topeka KS and Eaton Corp's facility in Kearney NE are among the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) elite environmental performers because they consistently exceed environmental requirements and make environmental protection an essential part of daily work, according to EPA information.

EPA said Goodyear’s superior environmental performance is demonstrated by its recycling efforts and hazardous waste management improvements. Goodyear recycled 41,800 pounds of non-hazardous wastes in a three-year period. The facility also reduced hazardous waste generation in parts cleaning process by 54,100 pounds.

EPA said Eaton’s superior environmental performance is demonstrated by its water conservation efforts and hazardous waste management improvements. Eaton modified its air compressor cooling process by circulating water, thereby saving 31 million gallons of water in a two-year period. The facility also reduced hazardous waste generation in its chrome plating process by 46,300 pounds.

Performance Track, launched by EPA in June 2000, recognizes and encourages public and private top environmental performers that voluntarily go beyond compliance with environmental regulations and commit to continual environmental improvement. Facilities must set three-year goals for continuous environmental improvements beyond requirements, establish an environmental management system, measure results, and work within their communities.
